All students have something to say. All students have imagination. All students have a voice that we will hear if we give them the opportunity to speak.
Students are empowered when given ownership and choice.
Students writing should be driven by their interests, passions and experiences.
Students should be treated as writers, as storytellers.
You cant write a story if you cant tell a story - the power of oral storytelling.
By the end of Term 3, students in Room 22, specifically the boys who were below expectation EOY 2016, will show accelerated progress in writing. They will have a positive perception of themselves as writers, and be able to show and explain what they do as good writers when achieving the National Standard for the End of Year 6.
Te Whare Rama
This innovative cluster-wide initiative, (North Shore RTLB) in partnership with Massey University, began as a project to address the needs of boys who are reluctant writers.
As the boys discovered the value of their own voice, they began to explore and take risks in their writing. The research made a number of findings including:
- The boys became intrinsically motivated to write as they gained a more positive perception of themselves as writers.
- There was improvement in the quality and quantity of writing samples.
